For many in Metro Detroit, the name Woodward Avenue elicits a lifetime of memories of cruising, shopping, attending theatre and sports events, dining, traveling, strutting our stuff, and a whole lot more. Woodward provides us all with a path to self expression and the freedom it brings. Whatever you seek, you can find it along Woodward Avenue. If you can't, then you'll meet someone who can or you're just not trying.
The Woodward Avenue corridor connects people. It connected people long before its official creation after the Detroit Fire of 1805 and connects people to this day. Woodward follows the historic Saginaw Trail that linked to the Mackinaw Trail and the Upper Peninsula. It was included in the Theodore Roosevelt International Highway system that connects Portland, Maine, with Portland, Oregon, through Ontario, Canada. It's also included in the Dixie Highway system, which connects Michigan with Florida.
Today, Woodward still collects and connects people from the East, West, North, and the South sides. It doesn't matter from which direction you travel, Woodward connects you to others or your destination. Start here if you're stuck in neutral.
Woodward Avenue has it all. It has the glitz and glamour of downtown Detroit, Ferndale, and Birmingham. It has the pursuit of excellence and knowledge at Wayne State University, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the many other local museums, theaters, libraries, and churches that dot its route. Woodward provides home to the Pistons, Tigers, Lions and Red Wings. Its other residences include weekly room rentals, motels (hourly?), hotels, plush estate mansions, and all combinations in between.
Woodward Avenue has the manufacturing brainpower and horsepower which put the world on wheels. It has the nightlife and dining spots to satisfy any craving and several research and regional hospitals to cure us and care for us when we get sick or injured. And don't forget the parks and plazas which bring us together, Woodward has plenty of those too.
Woodward Avenue's amazingness doesn't stop there, either. The 21.5 mile-long map of Woodward Avenue from Hart Plaza in Detroit to "The Loop" in Pontiac resembles the shape of a cotter pin or a dipstick. The wheel included the use of a cotter pin in its initial stone design and they're still being used in modern autos today. It's fitting that such a basic, yet powerful, design is reflected in the map of Woodward Avenue.
You can look it up if you're suspicious.
It's resemblance to the dipstick is equally amazing considering how Woodward Avenue is so synonymous with cruising culture and the motors that power the cars, tucks, motorcycles, etc., that cross it.
So, be a cotter pinhead or a dipstick! Join Woodward Wheels Cruising Club today and enjoy all that Woodward Avenue has to offer. You might be disappointed or you might also enjoy the shirt out of this club. There's only M-1 way to find out.
Like many ideas, the idea of Woodward Wheels Cruising Club was born over a pint or two of frosty beer plus a sheer contempt that no cruising club existed bearing the name of the road which was the home of the Model T, the first mile of cement pavement in the United States of America, and the art of cruising.
Sure, we have the Woodward Dream Cruise and all of the car clubs it attracts, but no "Woodward" themed club? What about the non-car cruisers and their love of Woodward? The Mecca of cruising lore and the lovers of Woodward Avenue deserved better. So, 218 years after its naming, Woodward Wheels Cruising Club was launched in Ferndale, MI on July 7, 2023 to celebrate its namesake.
The Woodward Wheels Cruising Club is a collection of unique individuals who congregate along the Woodward Avenue corridor. We range in age from young to old and share an affinity toward wheeled locomotion and connecting with friends and strangers alike. We're a reflection of the Woodward corridor itself with its diversity and power to connect people.
Some of our members choose to power their wheels with their own brute strength and others choose a more potent collection of horsepower as their power source. Our members may even be found gettin' their cruise on in one of the many forms of available mass transit along Woodward Avenue.
Celebrate wheeled locomotion of all stripes, Woodward Avenue, and our community. Join today!
How many different wheels do you see in this photo?
